Local labor market
The population of the working-age in Marijampolė district (70 km radius) is 422 000, of which 51 000 are university and college students. The region is characterized by a high level of education of the labour force, especially in the technical sciences and technology. As much as 19% of students from the region study technical professions! It also trains technologists, builders, agricultural specialists.
The number of graduates of Marijampolė College and Vocational Training Centre is more than 1 000 in different areas every year. In 2013, as many as 33 percent of the specialists trained by the Vocational Training Centre acquired and engineering profession while 29 percent were trained for the construction sector. Marijampolė College prepares specialists for business, agriculture and engineering industries.
Although the labour market in Marijampolė has many gifted and talented people, labour supply is not sufficient. The unemployment rate stands at 10.9% among the working age population (2013). Therefore, the average wage in Marijampolė is one of the lowest in Lithuania – 500 EUR/month. (2012). This is 4 times less than the EU average!
